Farouq Summoned by EFCC, The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a summons for former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, in connection with an alleged money laundering case involving N37,170,855,753.44 during her tenure. Despite citing health challenges and seeking a three-week extension, the EFCC has given her a three-day ultimatum to appear for interrogation.
Farouq Summoned by EFCC, who denies any association with the implicated contractor, James Okwete, had formally communicated her health-related constraints to the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede. However, the anti-graft agency has responded by demanding her appearance within three days or face being declared wanted.
The EFCC’s investigation into the alleged money laundering case prompted the commission to schedule an interview with Umar-Farouq on January 3, 2024, at 10 am. The request, made under the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004, and the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, necessitates her cooperation.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale clarified that Umar-Farouq’s health challenges were acknowledged, but the investigation couldn’t be delayed for three weeks. He affirmed the agency’s readiness to provide medical assistance if required, emphasizing the importance of honoring the invitation promptly.
Oyewale also addressed the mentioned amount of N37.1 billion, stating that the exact misappropriation figure might be higher, as the agency is actively tracing all transactions associated with the case. He further disclosed the release of Halima Shehu, the National Coordinator and CEO of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), following her interrogation over funds leaving the ministry’s coffers during Buhari’s tenure.
As the situation unfolds, the former minister faces a critical juncture, balancing legal proceedings and health concerns amid the intensifying investigation.
