In a recent revelation, the National Youth Service Corps Scheme (NYSC) addressed the issue of an Undercover Reporter Exposes mobilizing for the compulsory one-year program in 2019 and repeating the process in 2023. Mr. Eddy Megwa, the Director of Public Affairs at NYSC, explained on a Channels Television program that the reporter changed his email address and phone number to bypass the system, leading to his acceptance into the program.
Megwa acknowledged that the NYSC has checks and balances in place but revealed that the reliance on data provided by universities makes it challenging to detect such breaches. He highlighted that the NYSC doesn’t maintain a database of graduates but depends on lists submitted by university senators. While the National Identification Number (NIN) has been integrated into the scheme for three years, Megwa couldn’t explain why discrepancies in the reporter’s biodata between NIN and the second mobilization didn’t trigger a system alert.
Undercover Reporter Exposes regarding foreign certificates, Megwa clarified that it’s not the NYSC’s responsibility to assess them. Instead, foreign students are invited to take tests to evaluate their abilities. He emphasized that NYSC is an elite scheme with English as the primary means of communication.
Megwa revealed ongoing collaboration with the federal Ministry of Education, Foreign Affairs Ministry, and other agencies to track individuals studying abroad and verify their certificates upon return.
In response to the recent ban on certificates and degrees from some foreign universities, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students in the Republic of Benin, Okechukwu Favour, appealed to the government to reconsider the blanket ban. Favour expressed concerns about over 15,000 Nigerian students in Benin Republic, emphasizing that the ban would affect legitimate students at various stages of their studies. While acknowledging the need to punish wrongdoers, Favour urged the government to spare innocent students and target those involved in criminal activities.
The Federal Government, responding to the revelations by the undercover reporter, has imposed a ban on graduates from certain foreign universities. Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman announced the formation of a committee to assess the accreditation process for foreign universities and the legitimacy of their certificates.
